…You should still build and curate your site! Some majors do not require creating an ePortfolio, but having one could still benefit you. Wherever you are in your educational journey, give yourself some time to recognize your learning and accomplishments on a regular basis. Your ePortfolio site is a great tool to demonstrate learning across the semesters.
If you are a senior and have not gotten started yet, it’s not too late! Think about your goals for post-UNE life: what skills are most valued in the profession you want to enter, or how might you demonstrate your skills and unique experiences to grad schools? Your ePortfolio site gives you the control — highlight skills, experiences, work samples, or volunteer work. By building and curating your site, you also demonstrate digital competency.
Piper, class of 2024 graduate, shares her curated ePortfolio (see video link above), which she curated in her senior year. As she prepared to apply to PA school, she thought about the skills and knowledge she gained through select course work, shadowing, digital project work, and volunteer experiences.
What Should You Consider Including (or Not)?
Think about the other documentation you will be submitting: transcript, resume, standardized test scores. Consider your site as a place to elaborate on skills, experience, and course work that is not well represented yet or that could be highlighted.
- Do not include graded work. Instead, reflect on your learning from a project while also giving a brief description.
- Do not include contact information like your phone number, address, or hometown. Instead, include your email address. If you want to include info on where you are from, you might say “a city north of Boston” or “a rural town in western Maine.”
- Do not include copyrighted material (including images and music).
- Do not include images of people without their permission.
Media
Think about what you like to read or view on a website. How will use multimedia to engage a visitor? Do you have a multimedia project that may demonstrate your skills already? Do you want to use a blog-style format? Consider using unsplash.com or other Creative Commons and/or royalty-free images.
