You are probably familiar with organizational structures on websites, but you may not be familiar with web terminology. Here are some standard elements that organize your site:
- Site title and tagline (the subtitle of the site)
- Menus
- Categories
- Widgets
The site title should reflect the purpose of the site, for example, and clicking on the title will usually bring a visitor back to the home page (or landing page.). The default for UNE Portfolios is to have the site title include the student’s first name, but users can adjust to suit their preference, particularly if they do not use their legal first name. The site title should clearly identify the site’s builder, but in some cases, students may name their site to reflect their blog purpose. The site URL (address) cannot be changed, but the site title and tagline may be changed. The tagline is a subtitle to the site. Students sometimes use it to identify their major, state their graduation year, or give a memorable description of themselves. For example, a tagline might be “Writer, Athlete, and Karaoke Champion” or “Nursing Class of 2025.” A tagline may also offer a philosophy in the form of a famous quote or an expression that shows a philosophy that they try to live by.
The menu is likely a recognizable organizational element. Menus help a visitor understand the main content of the site. As with a restaurant menu or the menu on a retail site, the ePortfolio menu should help visitors by grouping related content together. Menus are custom built and can include pages, links, posts, or categories.
UNE Portfolio defaults to the blog roll as the home page, so the newest posts will appear at the top of the landing page. Some students prefer to have the About page as the landing page.
- To adjust the site title or tagline, click on Customize and then scroll to Site Identity. Save changes. From the dashboard, you will find these options under Appearances > Customize.
- To change your home page (also known as the landing page) to a static page instead of the latest blog posts, go to Settings >
Categories are another organizational structure of ePortfolios.
